RPG's popularity amongst developers
This graph shows games released over the years with the RPG tag and the percentage they represent. The number of releases gives a sense of the amount of games published each year. It often increases, following the total amount of Steam games released.
The percentage, on the other hand, gives a better idea of the trend a tag follows. It shows if, in proportion, the RPG tag is getting more or less popular from a developer's perspective. The Review chart can let us know if this trend is a positive thing (i.e. players interest for the tag is growing) or a negative one (the tag is overcrowded).
The RPG tag has peaked in 2022, with 1797 games released. The popularity of the tag is in a range between 2.1% in 2015 and 1.1% in 2021.
Keep in mind that the current year is not over, so the number of games released will still increase. But the percentage is usually a good estimate.
RPG's popularity amongst players
This chart shows the reviews for games with the RPG tag, either as count and as a percentage of all Steam reviews, and the average value for a game. If the graph is hard to read, you can deactivate the review count and % of the average lines by clicking on the legend.
While the review count clearly quantifies the reviews a tag receives, keep in mind that it also follows the popularity of Steam itself. The value normalized as a percentage of all Steam reviews is often more revealing, as it gives you the popularity trend for RPG tag games.
A typical game associated with this tag collected on average between 36 (2010) and 1032 (2014) reviews. Keep in mind that it is the average and not the median, meaning it is heavily influenced by extreme values, like a very successful game with this tag.
The reviews per game as a percentage of the average show that games in the RPG tag received between 100% (2010) and 177% (2012) reviews compared to other tags.
Price of games tagged with RPG
This chart displays the evolution of the RPG tag's games price in USD over time, as well as the percentage of free games in this tag. Bear in mind that there is inflation over time, which means that a price should slowly increase just to keep the same value.
The median price for RPG games peaked in 2008 at 9.99$, and bottomed in 2018 at 5.99$. The free to play ratio peaked in 2012 at 17%, and bottomed in 2023 at 1%.
Positive reviews ratio for RPG, per language
This chart shows an aggregated Steam rating for all the RPG tag games, classed by language. It gives an idea about how different audiences will judge a game with this tag. A lower rating doesn't necessarily mean that the audience doesn't like that tag. Some cultures have different standards and expectations. It will however affect a game's rating nonetheless.
The best rating for RPG games is 92% for the Vietnamese audience, and the worst is 77% for the Japanese audience.
