RPG games released over time
This graph shows games released over the years in the RPG genre and the percentage they represent. The number of releases gives a sense of the amount of games published each year. It often increases, following the total amount of Steam games released.
The percentage, on the other hand, gives a better idea of the trend a genre follows. It shows if, in proportion, the RPG genre is getting more or less popular from a developer's perspective. The Review chart can let us know if this trend is a positive thing (i.e. players interest for the genre is growing) or a negative one (the genre is overcrowded).
The RPG genre has peaked in 2022, with 2370 games released. The popularity of the genre is in a range between 8.6% in 2011 and 5% in 2017.
Keep in mind that the current year is not over, so the number of games released will still increase. But the percentage is usually a good estimate.
Evolution of RPG game reviews
This chart shows the reviews for games with the RPG genre, either as count and as a percentage of all Steam reviews, and the average value for a game. If the graph is hard to read, you can deactivate the review count and % of the average lines by clicking on the legend.
While the review count clearly quantifies the reviews a genre receives, keep in mind that it also follows the popularity of Steam itself. The value normalized as a percentage of all Steam reviews is often more revealing, as it gives you the popularity trend for RPG genre games.
A typical game associated with this genre collected on average between 40 (2010) and 1060 (2014) reviews. Keep in mind that it is the average and not the median, meaning it is heavily influenced by extreme values, like a very successful game with this genre.
The reviews per game as a percentage of the average show that games in the RPG genre received between 110% (2010) and 170% (2016) reviews compared to other genres.
Price of games in RPG genre
This chart displays the evolution of the RPG genre's games price in USD over time, as well as the percentage of free games in this genre. Bear in mind that there is inflation over time, which means that a price should slowly increase just to keep the same value.
The median price for RPG games peaked in 2014 at 9.99$, and bottomed in 2018 at 5.99$. The free to play ratio was at its lowest in 2015 at 7%, and peaked in 2020 at 16%.
Positive reviews for the RPG genre, per language
This chart shows an aggregated Steam rating for all the RPG genre games, classed by language. It gives an idea about how different audiences will judge a game with this genre. A lower rating doesn't necessarily mean that the audience doesn't like that genre. Some cultures have different standards and expectations. It will however affect a game's rating nonetheless.
The best rating for RPG games is 92% for the Vietnamese audience, and the worst is 77% for the Japanese audience.
