Metroidvania's popularity amongst developers
This chart shows the amount of games released over the years with the Metroidvania tag and the percentage of games released on Steam they account for. The releases count conveys the quantity of games published on Steam each year. It usually follows the increasing amount of Steam games released.
The percentage, on the other hand, gives a better idea of the trend a tag follows. It shows if, in proportion, the Metroidvania tag is getting more or less popular from a developer's perspective. The Review chart will tell us if this trend is a good thing (i.e. players interest is increasing, tag is undercrowded) or if it's the opposite.
The Metroidvania tag has peaked in 2022, with 182 games released. The tag's popularity is in a range between 0.3% in 2013 and 0.09% in 2018.
Bear in mind that 2023 is not over yet. The number of releases will continue to increase, but the percentage is already a good estimate of things to come.
Metroidvania's popularity amongst players
This chart shows the reviews for games with the Metroidvania tag, either as count and as a percentage of all Steam reviews, and the average value for a game. Note that if the chart is cluttered, you can always deactivate some lines by clicking on the legend.
While the review count clearly quantifies the reviews a tag receives, keep in mind that it also follows the popularity of Steam itself. The value normalized as a percentage of all Steam reviews is often more revealing, as it gives you the popularity trend for Metroidvania tag games.
A standard game associated with this tag received on average between 102 (2010) and 685 (2014) reviews. Bear in mind that it is the average, and it can be strongly influenced by extreme values, like the release of a very popular game with this tag.
The reviews per game as a percentage of the average show that games in the Metroidvania tag received between 106% (2014) and 318% (2011) reviews compared to other tags.
Price of games tagged with Metroidvania
This graph displays the evolution of the Metroidvania tag's games price in USD over the years, and the percentage of free to play games in this tag. Bear in mind that there is inflation over time, which means that a price should slowly increase just to keep the same value.
The median game price peaked in 2013 at 14.99$, and bottomed in 2017 at 7.99$. The free to play ratio peaked in 2020 at 8%, and bottomed in 2022 at 1%.
Positive reviews ratio for Metroidvania, per language
This chart shows an aggregated Steam rating for all the Metroidvania tag games, classed by language. It gives an idea about how different audiences will judge a game with this tag. A lower rating doesn't necessarily mean that the audience doesn't like that tag. Some cultures have different standards and expectations. It will however affect a game's rating nonetheless.
The highest rating for Metroidvania is 97% for the Romanian language, and the lowest is 83% for the Japanese language.
